“At Upbeat, I feel like I’m home.” | Nasir’s Story

We met Nasir (name changed) after he had been in Derby for less than a week. He has fled horrific persecution. We can’t share further details about his situation, as it would be extremely dangerous for him and his family. But we wanted to share with you the impact Upbeat has had on him already—with his permission, and in his own words.

“I met Ben (Upbeat Staff) in the hotel. My friend told me, ‘if you want anything, come speak with them and they can give you support’. Ben told me about Upbeat. After that, all I wanted to do was come to Upbeat. It was a very interesting place. The first time I came, I thought, ‘I really like this place’.

I try my best to be okay, I don’t want to be sad. I want to speak with people who give me good vibes, nice positive words, all the time. I came to the Upbeat English class first. It was good because the way Elliot (Upbeat Staff) teaches people is so professional and helpful. Upbeat treat people very well. They gave me toiletries which was very helpful, because I have nothing at the moment.

Then, I came to a welcome session at Upbeat. I knew some things about England before, but today I heard some very important things from Elliot. He taught me things I didn’t know about English culture. He also told me about the English flags, that they are not always welcoming.

Sometimes learning is not just being taught how to speak or write. Sometimes it’s about someone teaching you about unique, important things. How to be polite, how to interact.

At first I thought Upbeat was a fancy place, I thought I had to pay for the coffee! But then someone told me it was free. I said, ‘Thank you, I’m not here for the coffee—I’m here to practise English and meet people’.

At Upbeat I feel like I am at home already. Everything is lovely, people are so kind, and they treat you like you’re home. I’m able to forget what has happened to me in my country when I’m here.

When I first came, my heart was beating a lot—I was nervous. But I am glad I got out and came here. I feel hopeful and like I can believe in myself for my future now.

I’ve only come to Upbeat four times. It already feels like my home. After everything that has happened to me, I feel like Upbeat is my safe place.”
