How English Classes Help Refugees Build Confidence and Connection in Derby

Raj’s Story

When Raj (name changed) first arrived in Derby, he felt completely alone. Having lived in several different places across England, he was carrying uncertainty about the future and lacked the confidence to connect with people around him. Today he is a volunteer at Upbeat and is helping to create the same welcome that changed his own life.

“When I came to Derby, I was facing a tough time. Before that, I had lived in a few different places in England, but I struggled to talk to English people because I was scared.

“I felt alone, I didn’t know anything about Derby when I moved here. I didn’t have any friends, so at the time I didn’t want to stay here.”

Everything began to change when Raj met Don, an Upbeat volunteer, who met him on a befriending visit at his home and encouraged him to come along to Upbeat.

“I would like to thank Don for coming to visit me, he brought me to Upbeat and that changed everything.

“When I came along to Upbeat for the first time, they met me with such a warm welcome. I was introduced to my English teacher, Elliot (Upbeat staff member). The way he treated me kept me coming back again. I felt so welcome.

“English classes helped me improve my English so much, which made me gain confidence to talk to new people. This meant that I could make friends and start to rebuild my life here in Derby. I enjoyed learning too.”

For the first time since arriving in Derby, Raj was building connections and felt part of a community because he was regularly attending English Classes at Upbeat. But then Raj experienced another challenge just as he was starting to feel settled.

“A few months later, I became homeless. I tried many places, but I couldn’t find anywhere to stay.

“I spoke to Megan (Upbeat’s Hosting Manager) and she listened to my situation. She found me somewhere to stay and I remember feeling so much relief.

“I slept well. My host treated me very well and I learnt all about the UK lifestyle through him. I am so grateful for his support. I don’t know what I would have done without him and the hosting team.”

Today, Raj is no longer the person who arrived in Derby feeling anxious and isolated. He is now helping others to feel welcome as an Upbeat volunteer.

“Now, I am a volunteer. I welcome people, I make tea, coffee and lunch. I learn about different languages and cultures through talking to people.

“I am grateful for everyone at Upbeat. I want to thank all the staff, volunteers and supporters. I am so happy here.”

Derby is now a place where Raj feels connected, valued and supported. Through his volunteering, he is helping to make a welcoming environment for others rebuilding their lives.
