Nicky's Story: Twinning My Baby Shower with Upbeat Communities

Friends Sue and Nicky got stuck into fundraising when Nicky decided to twin her baby shower with Upbeat Communities, enabling her guests to make a donation towards our work with refugee mothers in Derby. Mum-to-be Nicky shared honestly about her experiences, and what inspired her to fundraise for us:

“When my friend Sue first suggested that I might like to twin my baby shower with Upbeat Communities to support refugee mums, I immediately thought ‘what a wonderful idea!’.

I’ve worked with refugees myself in Sudan in the past, and have seen first hand new mums who have just fled across the border from Chad, their villages burnt down, with just the clothes on their backs and a new baby wrapped in a towel. They are images that will never leave me.

Whilst our journey hasn’t been easy as we have journeyed through IVFs and baby losses, and complications during the pregnancy, we have been so fortunate to have the support of many wonderful healthcare professionals, friends, family and lots of prayer. We are so excited to finally meet our baby now!

To come to the UK as an expecting refugee mother, having fled a traumatic situation, not speaking the language or understanding what healthcare support you can expect must be incredibly overwhelming. I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity, together with my friends to be a part of enabling Upbeat Communities in making a difference to these women.”

A few words from Sue…

“I was absolutely delighted when Nicky asked me to help organise her Baby Shower and said that she wanted to twin it with Upbeat Communities. They are a wonderful charity who need our support, even more so at the moment. It was very easy to organise, Vicki at Upbeat sent me leaflets and helped me get the banner sorted. The women who were coming were already contributing towards the cost of their cream teas from a local café so we asked them to do bank transfers and add on a contribution for Upbeat Communities.

We were blown away by their generosity and even some of the women who couldn’t come still wanted to make a contribution. It was a wonderful afternoon celebrating Nicky and her baby, and extra special knowing that other babies will also be blessed as a result.”
