Upbeat Goes To Bakewell

Upbeat trips are about more than a fun day out (though that's important!). They're about helping participants to feel oriented in a new culture; getting out of the same four walls of temporary accommodation; and building friendships to feel less alone. In May, a group from Upbeat had the chance to visit Bakewell. Upbeat Volunteer Joan shares more about the day.

In response to a kind invitation by Bakewell Area Asylum Seekers’ and Refugees’ Network a group from Upbeat visited Bakewell. The weather was excellent as was the hospitality for a day in Derbyshire.

On the journey the children particularly enjoyed seeing the green fields, the tree covered hills and the sheep and cows grazing in the fields by the River Derwent.

A warm welcome with introductions and refreshments was given to start the day's programme.. Various activities were on offer, so everyone was able to choose what they wanted to do during the different parts of day. These included a walk by the river Wye, a visit to the museum, crafts e.g. making jewellery, and indoor and outdoor games. The children enjoyed the games outside and the crafts particularly and took back to Derby some beautifully made bracelets, hair slides, and decorated bags. Most of the adults enjoyed the stroll through Bakewell by the river and learning about earlier times in Britain and Bakewell through the items in the museum.

At 1 o'clock we gathered for lunch. It was a feast! There was a wide choice of dishes, followed by an assortment of home-grown fruit crumbles, desserts and ice cream.

Throughout the day, the hosts showed great kindness, generosity and great interest in everyone. We all left with very happy memories of an excellent day out in Bakewell.
